You may not believe, yet febuary is one of the most festive months in the year. The only reason is that many Carnivals are organized then. Wonderful period of the year- what's not to like - abundance of food, drinks, fun, plenty of dancers, entertaining programs. So, travellers, choose a destination...

There are some theories concerning the origins of Carnivals. One of them is related to the beginning of Lent. Other widespread theories claim that the celebrations are intended to drive away the bad spirits. There are too many festivals over the world. We will examine only the most spectacular and famous ones.

Rio Carnival

Millions of people visit Rio de Janeiro every year in order to participate this spectacular event. This is the most picturesque and the biggest Carnival in world. It starts wirh the crowning of the carnival personnage. After that the celebrations spread all over the city. The main moment is the Samba parade.

Venice Carnival

This is my favourite. The conseption of Venice Carnival is to remove the social status. That way people will become equal even for a while. Everybody wears wonderful ornated masks. The program includes many events, such as balls, dances, parades and many others. Fireworks, performances and acrobatic tricks and focuses make the spirit of Carnival even more irresistible and compelling. There is also a contest fot the best mask.

Nice Carnival

The Nice Carnival has such a festive atmosphere. During the day there are lots of parades. In the night - all the celebrations continue. They are accompanied by wonderful firework shows. Colourful lights change the whole appearance of the city.

Nice Carnival - the biggest winter event in Cote d'Azur

Carnival of Nice is one of the most famous in world, following the Carnival of Rio and the Carnival of Venice. The events will start 17 Fevrier and continue to 4 Mars. The King of the Nice Carnival 2011

One of the biggest winter events in the Cote d'Azur, the Carnival of Nice amuses crowds of people from all over the world. These colorful and gigantic parades take place day and night. The Carnival processions have on disposal 20 floats. They all will narrate the story of King of the Sport. They work their way up to a crescendo of gigantic decorations on the Place Massena.

As we already have said you don't have to miss the Flower Battles. In the Promenade des Anglais, in a unique atmosphere and floats decorated with an axtraordinary floral compositions, wonderfully dressed dancers throw out gerberas, lilies and mimosas at the public.

Carnival of Venice - Masquerade time

Venice is not only very interesting and picturesque city in Italy, this is also the city that hosts the Carnival of Venice, which is annualy conducted. If it happens that you travel at that time of the year - this is the place you should visit. The tradition of conducting the Carnival of Venice exists since 15th century. It's very spectacular event. The festival starts 40 days before Easter and ends the day before Ash Wednesday. The original purpose was to remove the social boundaries between the classes. After 1970 was decided  this event to be renewed. Each year a great number of tourists travel and come to Venice in order to take part in the Carnival. One of the most interesting parts of it is the contest for best mask desguise. As the masks are fundamental for the festival, this is not surprising at all. The atmosphere of Venice itself is wonderful to be experienced, but the masks, dresses and ornately decorated hats only reinforce the greatness of it. You will feel as you've stepped back in time. Amazing!

Masks Bauta- this kind of masks cover the whole face. Nowadays the most used masks are these who cover the eyes, forehead, upper cheeks and nose, but enable the person who wears it to talk, eat and drink with ease. However, they still keep his identity hidden. I personally enjoy a lot this whole magnificent festival. Celebrations are so flamboyant with all the people wearing these gorgeous ornated masks.

As Christmas is approaching, I think a lot about Finland and even more about The Santa Claus Village. If you're planning to travel somewhere for the winter holidays this is a great place to visit. There are  four seasons, but  winter is the time of the year when Finland is most beautiful. It's essential to say that you have to be prepared for a really cold weather.
